KD River Cruises of Europe
began cruising the Rhine river in 1827, and over the years entered the
Moselle, the waterways of Holland, the Main, Elbe, Saar, Neckar, and
Danube.In 1826, 10 years after
the first steamship to navigate the Rhine, the city fathers of Cologne
established the Prussian Rhine Steamship Company of Cologne, forerunner
of KD River
Cruises of Europe. It
was one of Germany’s first stock companies, shareholders being almost
all townspeople of Cologne. For more than a century the Cologne Company
operated ferries and freighters, first in competition with and later
together with the Köln (Cologne) - Düsseldorfer Line or, for short, KD.
It took another 114 years to become a single company, and later when it
expanded to other rivers, the name changed to KD River Cruises of
Europe.
KD nowadays operates
almost 400 cruises on some of Europe’s most appealing waterways flowing
through Germany, Austria, Holland, Switzerland, Slovakia, Hungary, the
Czech Republic and France. During its long experience, KD has developed
and maintained meticulous standards of service that has become its
hallmark. KD is now part of Viking River Cruises, which also operates in
France and Russia.
